UPI made India the world's biggest real-time payments market — and its biggest fraud playground. Over 13.4 lakh UPI fraud cases worth ₹1,087 crore were reported in a single financial year, nearly double the year before. The frauds are psychological, not technical: nobody 'hacks' UPI; they trick you into authorising the payment yourself.
The four UPI scripts emptying Indian accounts
- The collect-request trick — 'I am sending you money, just approve the request.' A collect request DEBITS you; approving it pays them
- The refund scam — fake customer care 'processing your refund' walks you through payments disguised as verification
- Screen-share frauds — AnyDesk/TeamViewer installed on the pretext of 'fixing' something; they watch your PIN and drain the account
- QR code baiting — 'scan this QR to RECEIVE payment.' Scanning and entering PIN sends money; receiving never needs a PIN
The first hour: exactly what to do
Call 1930 immediately with the transaction reference (UTR) numbers, amounts and the fraudster's UPI ID. This routes into the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System, which flags the beneficiary account across banks — money still sitting in the chain gets held. Then file the detailed complaint on cybercrime.gov.in and inform your own bank in writing the same day; RBI's limited-liability circular protects customers who report unauthorised transactions promptly.
'Held' is not 'returned' — the step everyone misses
Thousands of victims see 'amount put on hold' in their complaint status and then wait months, confused. Held money does not come back automatically. It sits frozen in the beneficiary account until a legal process releases it back to you — typically a refund application before the jurisdictional magistrate, supported by the investigating officer's report. This is precisely the stage where we take over: we convert holds into refund orders, and stalled complaints into moving files.
What recovery honestly looks like
Reported in the first 24–48 hours: strong chances that part or all of the money is held and ultimately refundable. Reported after a week: depends on what remains in the chain — an honest assessment of your transaction trail tells us quickly whether legal spend is justified. Either way, you will get a straight answer before you spend a rupee. Call +91 78629 82475; the first consultation is free.
